Uganda Travel Information
Everything you need to know before your safari in the Pearl of Africa.
Welcome to Uganda
Uganda, famously known as the Pearl of Africa, is one of the most diverse and rewarding safari destinations in Africa. Visitors come for mountain gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, wildlife safaris, rich culture and stunning landscapes, from tropical rainforests to savannah plains and crater lakes.
Before you travel
Entry Requirements
Most travelers need a visa and should apply online through the official Uganda eVisa system before arrival. Passports must be valid for at least six months from entry, with one blank page.
Health and Vaccinations
A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required to enter Uganda. Consider vaccinations for Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Tetanus, and ask your doctor about malaria prevention.
Best Time to Visit
Uganda is a year-round destination. The dry seasons from June to September and December to February are best for gorilla trekking and wildlife.
What to Pack
Lightweight clothing, a light rain jacket, comfortable hiking boots, sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, binoculars and a camera. Long sleeves and trousers suit forest trekking.
Currency and Payments
The local currency is the Ugandan Shilling. US Dollars are widely accepted for safari payments and permits. Carry newer notes printed after 2009, and some cash for smaller purchases.
Airport Information
Most international visitors arrive through Entebbe International Airport, near Lake Victoria and about 40 km from Kampala.

Gorilla Trekking
Trekking takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla national parks. A permit is required and should be booked in advance because daily availability is limited.
Safety Tips
Uganda is considered a safe destination, particularly with a professional guide. Follow park ranger instructions during wildlife activities and keep valuables secure.
Culture and Etiquette
Ugandans are known for their friendliness. Modest dressing is appreciated in rural communities, and please ask permission before photographing people.
Electricity and Plugs
Uganda uses 240 volts and British-style three-pin plugs (Type G). A universal travel adapter is useful.
Internet and Mobile
Coverage is available in most towns and many safari lodges. Local SIM cards can be bought on arrival for affordable data and calls.
Tipping Guidelines
Tipping is appreciated, though not mandatory. Visitors commonly tip safari guides, lodge staff and porters.
